Out: Hobbits
In: Gelflings
Fantasy fans have had a rough run lately. The original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was an incredible achievement. The “Hobbit” trilogy was a bloated mess. “Game of Thrones” seemed to offer the magic and imagination those fans crave, but the final few seasons fumbled badly. Could Netflix ride to the rescue?
Today, the streaming giant shared a full trailer for their upcoming series, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” Take a look.
The video description also adds a bit more information than we’ve previously had…
“Light the fires of resistance! Join Deet, Rian and Brea on an epic quest to find hope in darkness, save Thra, and reveal their destiny. Nothing will ever be the same.”
The most impressive thing about these early scenes is the visual feel. Head to the movies today and you’re likely to see CGI superheroes or CGI remakes of animated Disney movies. This new “Dark Crystal” series features practical puppets mixed with apparently judicious CGI. The result is tactile and refreshing. Sure, the creatures still look stiff, but they’re actually there .
The biggest “wow” in the trailer is this crazy shot:
Clearly, that’s all CGI, but it looks fantastic.
