Huge video game news: What turned heads at Gamescom 2018

by Virginia Campbell

Gamescom 2018 has finally come to a close. Europe’s answer to E3 is a global affair, attracting some of the biggest game companies from around the world for some of the biggest announcements in the industry. This year was no exception, with huge news coming in for some of the most anticipated upcoming titles. Here’s our roundup of the best-in-show for Gamescom 2018.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 was once again front and center, finally confirming Claire Redfield as a playable character. Capcom showcased several minutes of Claire gameplay at the expo. In the trailer above, we can see Claire meeting up with Sherry Birkin, and we also get a look at the infamous mutated William Birkin. We also see the first appearance of the villainous Chief Irons, who fans of the original will remember putting in quite a sinister appearance. He looks like he’ll be having a larger role in this iteration of the game.

The new combat mechanics are also on display, requiring a more deliberate approach to encounters. Resident Evil has yet again shown why it’s become one of the most highly anticipated upcoming games, and is due for a January 2019 release.

Resident Evil 2: Everything we know so far

Life is Strange 2

Life is Strange 2 has finally been revealed. Earlier in the month, a cryptic teaser was released in the form of a demo titled The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. The demo follows a young boy named Chris as he takes on his alter superhero identity of Captain Spirit, eventually discovering that his superpowers are more real-life than imaginary. Captain Spirit, for now, is taking a back seat. We don’t see any of Chris in the LIS2 trailer, but it’s been confirmed he will be included in the game.

Instead, the game will be focusing on two brothers, Daniel and Sean Diaz, on the run across the United States after an incident involving Daniel’s powers gets them in trouble with the police. Unlike the first few games, which took place in the single town of Arcadia Bay, LIS2 will be a road trip across a variety of settings. Like previous games in the series, LIS2 will be released episodically, with Episode 1 due for a September 27th release.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most talked about titles to put in an appearance at this year’s Gamescom, and for good reason. We haven’t seen much of the game up to this point, and now CD Projekt Red has debuted a whole 48 minutes of gameplay, which can be seen above. The demo showcases one of the game’s side missions and important mechanics, such as the ability to approach conflicts either peacefully or violently. There’s also a huge arsenal of weapons to choose from and a scanning mechanic reminiscent of Watch Dogs. Oh, and of course there’s enough hacking to make any 80s nerd swoon.

The game world also looks to be massive, and Night City looks like it’ll have plenty to interact with and explore. Though an official release date has yet to be confirmed, speculation points to a release at some point in 2019.

Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5 is back, debuting its first gameplay trailer at gameplay. The series looks just as intense, stylish, and violent as ever. We see Dante’s reveal in the trailer above, but it doesn’t give much in the way of plot details. From what’s been revealed so far, we know that Dante and Nero are back, running a demonic hunting agency out of the back of Nero’s van. We also know that the game is going to support 4k and 60FPS and will be running on Resident Evil 7’s RE engine, which explains the stellar visuals. DMC5 is slated for a March 8, 2019 release.

Overwatch

Overwatch was also in the spotlight showcasing another one of their trademark character shorts. This time, tank character d.Va was front and center, fighting off Omnics in South Korea. The short’s release coincided with the release of a new map set in South Korea, Busan, as well as several d.Va promotional items. The short is, as usual, incredible, and we’ve got our fingers crossed that Blizzard’s got an Overwatch movie in the works.

These are only a few of the huge announcements showcased at this year’s Gamescom. It’s clear that we’ve got plenty to look forward to in 2019, so be sure to check back with Softonic for updates.
